Last week I watched the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and I thought it was great! Not so much because of the dysfunctional British relationships but because it reminded me of all the things I love about India. I’ve been to India twice, once in 2005 when I first volunteered at the Raffa Home, and again in 2007, when Jon and I returned to travel and revisit the boys that we had come to know and love. They taught us how to make kites, and fly them, how to play cricket, and how to survive in the melting heat and summer showers that fall on Delhi every July-August. They also taught us just how many people you can cram in an auto rickshaw- I think 10 was our record!
So the film took me back to the warmth, the dust, the hecticness, the colours, the smells, the sights and the sounds of India. Maybe one day we’ll go back and experience it all again…
But enough about that. Nearly 5 years on from our trip, some of the boys in the Raffa Home are now 18 years old, and they’re starting to gear up to life in the big noisy world of their capital city. A couple of the boys, Chaman and Gein, have started working, and others are looking for jobs. They are already volunteering at the local church and helping out in the surrounding community. Watch this space for more updates from the boys on how they’re getting on with this new stage of life!
Yes, it’s back, the Names Not Numbers pub quiz has returned after a long-awaited 6 month gap! The next quiz will be happening at the Punchbowl pub on Crookes, on May 2nd, and we’d love to see you there.
Doors from 7:30pm, come with a team or find one when you get there, entry is £2 per person. All proceeds go to our amazing causes!
At the start of the new financial year, we thought it’d be a good idea to keep you posted on how much money was raised last year. Well (drum roll please…) we’re delighted to let you know that from April 2011-March 2012 an amazing £5,650 was raised for Names Not Numbers, all thanks to the generous donations of people across Sheffield and further afield!
We have seen an increase in regular giving which is particularly great, as this is the best way for us to plan ahead and ensure that the projects we support know how much money they’re getting from us each month! In fact, since Jan 2012 three new regular givers have joined the NNN family which is amazing! Thanks a million lovely people!
The great thing is that we’re always on the lookout for more people to donate on a regular basis to our work. Could you support our work in this way? It doesn’t have to be much- even a few quid each month will make a big difference to the lives of the children living in the Raffa Home and Tshwaranang. Get in touch to find out more!
One of the charities we support is Tshwaranang. They’re a community centre that run several projects in the area, including a children’s home called Hope house.
A few changes have occurred over the past few weeks. They are currently looking for a new social worker – please pray that they find the right person for the role and that funding increases.
In other news, the house mother, Kim who has been at the home for nearly a year now has recently been in a car accident. She has broken her back and undergone surgery. We hope that she fully recovers and is back with the children soon! I am sure they are missing her!
